Healthy Strawberry ShortCake in a Budget

For the past couple of days, I was craving for strawberries that prompted hubby to buy me lots of fruits. However, since we stored up lots of fruits, I feel pressured to use or consume it before its going to perish in the soonest time, particularly the strawberries.

So while I was walking in the grocery aisle, this angel food cake bar caught my attention. My imaginative mind rushed to think about how to create a dessert made up of strawberries. In my mind, I can slice the bar into 10 pieces and add some light toppings such the like of sour cream instead of heavy whipping cream along with strawberries of course.

Since our one way of eating strawberries is to dunk it in sour cream with brown sugar, I played along with light sour cream while mixing the brown sugar. At least, it’s only 200 calories per slice, which is much lesser than a typical strawberry shortcake serving.

As a matter of fact, I ate it for breakfast and no guilt feeling at all the following day. Therefore, that way the leftover strawberries we gone in one day.


1 bar of angel food cake
25 slices of strawberries
1/4 cup light sour cream
2 tablespoons of brown sugar
(you can use 1 or 2 tablespoon of milk but this is optional)


Slice strawberries and angel food cake to your desired biting size. Blend the mixture of sour cream and brown sugar, or you can add a tad of milk if it’s not thin enough to pour the topping. Arrange the sliced angel cake on a dish, top with strawberries and trickle with sugar mixture and light sour cream.
